About The Town of Carmel, NY:

Carmel, which was established in 1795 and designated as the county seat in 1812 is home to those and many other pieces of Putnam’s past. The historic Putnam county courthouse a monument to Greek revival architecture was erected in 1814. It is the second oldest courthouse in New York State. Several initiatives are in the works to further beautify the 35.8 square mile town and highlight other aspects of former times.

The bulk of Carmel's 33,006 population lives in Mahopac. About 5,650 reside in the hamlet of Carmel. There are downtown centers in both hamlets. North on Lake Gleneida at route 52 and Fair Street, this county is transforming a former gas station to a tiny pocket park and museum.

The town was first settled around 1740 by George Hughson. On the night of April 26, 1777, after learning the news that the British had begun burning nearby Danbury, Connecticut, sixteen-year-old Sybil Ludington rode her horse, Star, the entire night through the towns of Carmel, Mahopac, Kent Cliffs and Farmers Mills warning those along the way that the British were coming before returning home at dawn. A statue memorializing the female Paul Revere sits along side Lake Gleneida.

Carmel was established from part of the Town of Kent (then known as Frederickstown) in 1795. Carmel was designated the county seat in 1812. In 1861, a small part of Carmel was taken to be added to the Town of Putnam Valley. In 1924, much of the town burned.
