About Mahopac:

Mahopac is more than just a geographic location within the town of Carmel — it has some of the priciest real estate in the county and one of the most gorgeous lakes in New York State; Lake Mahopac. It offers a selection of typical neighborhoods and in addition, private estates.

Mahopac is the home to Carmel's Town Hall and offers shopping areas along the route 6N and 6 triangle. An area around Lake Mahopac has been recently transformed into a gazebo and park that is home to many community parades and fairs.

A new 30,000-square-foot state of the art public library along Lake Mahopac has given the community offers meeting rooms for local programs and a large resource for students of all ages. It also happens to provide breathtaking views of Lake Mahopac.

Within the past three years, the Chamber of Commerce of the Mahopacs completed a 1.6-acre park along Lake Mahopac, providing public access to the lake. Local historian Allan Warnecke spearheaded a project to renovate a swath of land in the Red Mills district to highlight the area's former historic grist and saw mills in Mahopac Falls.

The Mahopac Sports Association, a very active group of nearly 2,200 families, offers youth and adult sports activities nearly every weekend and on weeknights during the spring and summer. Baseball and soccer are particularly large draws, but organizers say football and basketball also are popular. The association is working to increase the number of playing fields in Mahopac, saying demand has exceeded capacity of fields at parks and public schools.

The town government is on McAlpin Avenue and is undergoing its own renovations this year.

Mahopac became a popular summer recreation community in the 1800s. Visitors from New York City came by train to Croton Falls and then took a stagecoach on to Mahopac. Areas around Lake Mahopac, Kirk Lake, Lake Secor and Lake MacGregor became dotted with cottage-style homes built for casual living. The area remained primarily a resort destination until major parkways were built in the 1950s.

It now has become a year-round community with many residents who work in Putnam County, Westchester County, and New York City.

The owners of one Mahopac property are completing a dream project to build a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home on a private island within Lake Mahopac.

Every summer, the lake is filled with boaters, water skiers and swimmers, reminding observers why Mahopac became so popular nearly 200 years ago.

Shopping:

There are several shopping centers with small boutique stores and supermarkets. Clothing shopping is offered by the Jefferson Valley Mall on Rt 6, as well as downtown White Plains (30 minutes by car), and the Danbury Fair Mall in Connecticut (20 minutes by car).
